Principal Optical Systems Engineer

Arizona Optical Systems (AOS) is seeking a Principal Optical Systems Engineer to join our engineering team in the development of advanced imaging and metrology systems for our aerospace and astronomical business areas.  A primary role of this position is to provide technical leadership to multidisciplinary engineering groups within AOS, and to engage in hands-on design, manufacture, integration and testing of advanced optical systems that push the state of the art in the areas of optical imaging and metrology.  Other important roles of this position are to work with the company directors in developing technology roadmaps for future business opportunities related to optical systems and also to provide technical expertise to existing programs.

The successful candidate must have a thorough understanding of optical engineering principles, significant optical design experience, as well as strong analytical skills to lead the engineering groups on various AOS programs that require custom high performance optical systems.  We are seeking a candidate that can equally provide a rigorous analytical solution to a challenging design problem or can step back and take a common sense approach to evaluate a problem from a different solution space.

Job Duties:

  • Leads engineering team and coordinates tasks for design, development and production of optical systems
  • Develop designs for optical systems, including optical systems requirements and specifications, production and integration plans, and test methods to ensure that the design complies with customer requirements
  • Plans research and develop efforts aimed at advanced technologies applied to testing and producing optical systems
  • Provides support to the engineering and production departments by troubleshooting critical processes and providing technical expertise
  • Perform top level technical trade studies to evaluate, choose and optimize technical performance and manufacturability of potential concepts
  • Coordinate with other technical team members on experimental and risk reduction design problems
  • Provide practical, hands-on optical fabrication and test skills from personal previous experience
  • Provide significant contributions to problem solving related to metrology systems, data collection, analysis, and data interpretation
  • Support technical meetings with customers, including design reviews and other milestone events
  • Write technical proposals for new business
  • Provide expertise to assist in generating cost models and budgets for new proposals
  • Document and demonstrate solutions and results by developing reports, diagrams, charts, etc.
  • Generates technical papers to present at scientific conferences

Job Skills and Qualifications:

  • Ability to work closely with potential and current customers
  • Ability to architect, specify, and test complex optical systems
  • Ability to understand and generate accurate fabrication and test budgets
  • Thorough understanding of performance testing and validation of optical systems and components
  • Hands-on experience with lasers, opto-mechanical and electro-optic components and systems
  • High degree of proficiency using Zemax or equivalent optical Raytrace software
  • Ability to use Matlab programing language to analyze optical performance data
  • Ability to produce cost estimates for conceptual optical systems
  • Experience with optical metrology instrumentation and software
  • Strong problem solving and communications skills
  • Experience in producing typical report packages, such as CoDR, PDR, CDR, using Powerpoint
  • Experience in optical testing of precision optical imaging and metrology systems

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree or PhD in Optics or similar fields, with 10 or more years of experience working with optical systems
  • Demonstrated ability to design, specify, build and test complex optical systems
  • Candidate must be a US citizen under ITAR regulations

Preferred Additional Experience:

  • Understanding of optomechanical principles is highly desirable
  • Knowledgeable in optical fabrication methods

Principal Opto-Mechanical Engineer

Arizona Optical Systems, LLC is seeking a Principal Opto-Mechanical Engineer with a minimum of seven years of experience in the aerospace industry in designing, fabricating, aligning, testing, and commissioning high accuracy optical systems. The successful candidate will become a senior member of the AOS optics team developing state of the art imaging systems, telescopes, and metrology tools. The candidate must have significant experience in leading a mechanical design team through the development of high accuracy optical systems from the conceptual design phase through integration and test. Responsibilities include:

  • Understanding and working with customer mechanical requirements to optimize them and create flowdown requirements for AOS mechanical designers

  • Optimize mechanical and optical performance of systems through iterative design processes including FEA, and thermal analysis.
  • Create and maintain a top down and bottoms up mechanical tolerance budgets
  • Work with a design team to create full GD&T drawing packages and detailed assembly plans
  • Create mechanical task plans, and work with program managers to achieve program goals
  • Provide practical, hands-on skills in working with engineers and technicians in a lab environment
  • Must have excellent communication skills to effectively relay information and ideas to peers, sr. management, customers, and vendors

Minimum Requirements to be considered are:

  • Master’s Degree or PhD in Optics, Mechanical engineering, or similar fields, with 7 or more years of experience.

Required Additional Experience:

  • Design experience with Solidworks and Zemax – required
  • Experience with optimizing mechanical designs with FEA feedback (can rely on a specialist for specific analysis) – required
  • Experience with optimizing mechanical designs with thermal performance feedback (can rely on a specialist for specific analysis) – required
  • Strong working knowledge of optics, as well as alignment and test principles – required
  • Strong understanding of mechanics of materials and mechanisms for fine mechanics -required
  • Experience in producing typical report packages, such as CoDR, PDR, CDR – required
  • Analytical experience with Matlab – desirable
  • Experience with spaceflight hardware, including knowledge of end-to-end procedures for qualification of spaceflight systems – desirable

Preferred Additional Experience:

The successful candidate will have experience in developing mechanical designs for space applications where holding optical tight alignment budgets in launch, space, and dynamic thermal environments are drivers.

Senior Optical Systems Engineer

AOS is seeking an experienced Optical Systems Engineer to participate in the development of advanced optical metrology systems. We are looking for a team-oriented, self-driven individual with a keen technical mind and an eye for detail. The successful candidate must have a detailed understanding of hardware engineering with demonstrated experience developing optical systems.   • Perform analytical assessments of complex optical systems

The successful candidate will become a senior member of the AOS optics team developing state of the art mechanical systems in support of demanding astronomical, aerospace/defense, and IRAD programs. The candidate must have significant experience in leading a mechanical design team through the development of precision mechanical systems from the conceptual design phase through integration and test. The successful candidate will have in depth knowledge of mechanical design principles for systems that operate in the presence of thermal excursions, vacuum environments, and vibrations.
