Opto-Mechanical Engineer

Summary: Arizona Optical Systems, LLC seeks an innovative, creative engineer for the position of Opto-Mechanical Engineer. The selected candidate will perform opto-mechanical design and engineering calculations for complex structures and systems. Examples of typical systems include; 1) support cells and glass-to-metal interface features for large optical components ranging in size from 25mm up to 2-meters, 2) stable weldments and structures to support large optics or test equipment, 3) custom fixtures and tools for handling and manufacturing large optical components, 4) custom machines for manufacturing or testing large optical components, and 5) precision mechanical and optomechanical assemblies.

The Opto-Mechanical Engineer will be part of an engineering team that works closely with AOS scientists and other AOS engineering groups (optical, electrical, and software) to solve challenging design tasks in support of AOS programs from a wide range of customers within the astronomical, aerospace and defense, and government research lab communities.  Many of our programs push the state-of-the-art in terms of applied technologies for optical manufacturing, alignment and testing, therefore this position requires a unique individual that has sound fundamental knowledge of mechanics, precision mechanics and optomechanics, as well as the ability to learn quickly.  The selected candidate must also have strong communication and organizational skills, as well as the ability to multi-task.  In addition, the candidate should have working knowledge of machining tolerances and machining processes.

Description of Duties:

  • Performs mechanical engineering design and calculations on mechanical and opto-mechanical systems
  • Estimates level of effort and schedule required to carry out specific tasks
  • Oversees the fabrication of experimental equipment
  • Performs research relating to each specific project; writes documentation
  • Coordinates with other project group members and supervisor on design problems
  • Writes specifications for purchase of new equipment
  • Requisitions components and supplies of engineering projects, interacting with vendors to obtain price and product information
  • Oversees the design or develops engineering drawings including plans and specifications based on calculations; checks, interprets and revises engineering drawings.
  • Collaborates with project managers and others in the development of project plans, proposals and schedules.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, AND four years of mechanical or opto-mechanical engineering or related experience
  • Knowledge of mechanical and opto-mechanical engineering principles and procedures
  • Knowledge of mechanical design applications
  • Knowledge of equipment and systems appropriate to opto-mechanical systems
  • Proficiency in the use of SolidWorks
  • Skill in applying engineering principles and procedures
  • Ability to effectively communicate both written and oral
  • Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Must be a US Person

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the use of Finite Element Analysis software
  • Knowledge of basic optical aberrations
  • Experience in designing and building vacuum-compatible systems
  • Experience in designing passively athermalized systems through the use of differential CTE
  • Experience with motion control systems
  • Experience with cleanroom environments
